The Supreme Court, in a questionable decision, decided that American Presidents are entitled to immunity while performing official acts. It was predictable that this power would be abused as we see Donald Trump running roughshod over the Constitution as in his attempt to eliminate birthright citizenship. His Republican friend Florida Representative Cory Mills, who physically assaulted a woman but has yet to have any repercussions, seems to believe he's also teflon.
When Washington DC police were called to the penthouse apartment of Mills the facts seemed clear. A 27-year old woman said he assaulted her, showed police the bruises, and provided DC cops with a recording of Mills asking her to lie about the incident. The initial report labeled the incident an “assault.” After hearing Mills would be arrested, the woman changed her story, saying her bruises were really from exczema and activities related to her recent trip to Dubai. She stated she was confused and exhausted from her 14-hour flight. Mills himself acknowledged there was a verbal altercation that turned physical though he didn’t think it was enough to cause bruises.
Metro police issued an arrest warrant for Rep. Mills which they sent to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington D.C. for a signature. I suspect the U.S. Attorney doesn’t have to give permission for the arrest of an average citizen in cases like this, but that’s just me.
A second police report was issued, reducing the assault charge to a “family matter.” That might come as a surprise to Mill’s wife and children. The unidentified woman doesn’t appear to be related to Mills in any way. A witness interviewed by the police indicated the two had been engaged in a relationship for over a year.
I question why DC police had to get approval to arrest Mills when, based on the evidence, it should have happened immediately. Why did the U.S. Attorney refuse to sign the warrant? How does a Florida Congressman afford a DC luxury penthouse?
This special treatment can only be related to Mills being a member of Congress. Mills has previously said he would run for the Senate seat vacated by now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio next year. Another Floridian, former drug dealer Rep. Byron Donalds, indicates he may run for governor. It must be something in the Florida water that convinces convicted felons and others to act with impunity when engaging in criminal activity.
DC police are reviewing how the Mills report was handled, and the U.S. Attorney refuses to comment on “uncharged cases.” It looks like friends of the president are immune from prosecution, expanding the definition of presidential immunity and official acts. Now that the non-arrest has been made public, we’ll see if anything comes from it.
